Our story, since 1953

In 1953 Dr. Gerald Roberts opened the first dental practice in the town of Vienna, when the town had one physician and one dentist. Dr. Lenz joined him in 1988 and has carried that care on ever since. In 2014, with Dr. Sullivan, he added a second office in Washington, taking over a Cleveland Park practice that Drs. Almo and Selvaggio had run for more than 35 years.

Tania and Iris, at the DC front desk, have been with that practice since the mid-1990s, first for Drs. Almo and Selvaggio. Some things were worth keeping.

How a visit feels

Personal, gentle, and nothing hidden.

Personalized, gentle, comprehensive care is the practice’s number one priority. Here is what that means in the chair.

An empty dental treatment chair in a calm, softly lit room.
01

Nitrous oxide, if you want it

The problem: dreading the chair so much you put the visit off.

You breathe it, you stay in control, and its relaxing effect develops in two or three minutes. The depth can be changed at any time and there is no “hangover” afterwards. Ask for a five-minute trial first.

Sealed, sterilized dental instruments beside a steam autoclave.
02

Clean enough to ask about

The problem: the part of a dental office nobody shows you.

The whole team follows the procedures of OSHA, the EPA and the CDC. Every reusable instrument, hand pieces included, is sterilized by steam, heat and pressure in an autoclave before every use. Ask us about it and you will get a straight answer.

A dental x-ray on a monitor, with a hand pointing to one tooth.
03

Told plainly, before anything starts

The problem: being handed a treatment plan and a bill you did not expect.

We explain what to expect during treatment and give you up-front cost information ahead of time. Bring headphones and music if it helps, and tell us openly what worries you.

Dental Implants

Tiny titanium posts placed in the jaw bone, which bond to it over three to six months. A custom abutment then carries a crown that looks, feels and functions like a natural tooth, and helps preserve the bone.

Implant-Retained Dentures

Two implants for a denture that snaps on, four to six for one that clips firmly onto a custom bar, or five or more for a fixed denture. More stable while you eat, and kinder to bone and gums.

Porcelain Veneers

Thin shells of ceramic bonded to the front of the teeth, highly resistant to coffee and tea stains. With proper care they last well over a decade.

Teeth Whitening

Custom trays are ready a day or two after impressions. A few hours of wear a day lifts the stain without altering the tooth or any existing dental work.

Advanced technology

Often, a crown in a single visit.

Our Vienna and DC offices were some of the very first in the area to offer digital impressions, and with them, often, same-day crowns.

  • Digital impressions and in-office millingAn optical scan replaces the tray of impression material. The restoration is designed in Exocad software and milled on our VHF Z4 unit, so crowns, inlays, onlays and veneers can often be finished in one day.
  • Digital radiographsOften one-sixth the radiation of traditional film, viewed on a monitor, and sent straight to a specialist or your insurer when needed.
  • Diode laserFor gum treatment, canker sores and tongue-tie release, often with no sutures and faster healing.
  • Intraoral cameraClear, enlarged images of your own teeth on a screen, so you see what the dentist sees.

Common questions

What people ask before they book.

Do you take my insurance?

We do not participate with any dental insurance company, but as a courtesy we complete and file your insurance forms for you, except for HMO/DMO or Medicaid policies. If you ask, we will contact your insurer before treatment for a complimentary estimate of your benefits. Our recommendation is always based on what is best for you, never on what a policy covers.

Which office should I book?

Whichever is closer. Vienna is at 138 Church St. NE, 703-938-6669. Washington, DC is at 4200 Wisconsin Ave. NW, Suite 530, 202-362-5596. Call the office you want to visit to book.

I am nervous about the dentist. What can you do?

Tell us when you book. We explain clearly what to expect before anything starts, you are welcome to bring headphones and music, and nitrous oxide is available. You can ask for a five-minute trial of it first to see how it feels.

Something hurts or has broken. Can I be seen today?

Call the office directly. If you are in pain or have an emergency, every attempt will be made to see you the same day you contact us.

What happens at a first visit?

A thorough examination, any x-rays that are needed, a cleaning with the hygienist if you asked for one when booking, then a review of your treatment options. Bring any previous x-rays, a list of your medications and your insurance forms. Patients under 18 must come with a parent or guardian.

Can a crown really be done in one day?

Often, yes. We take a digital scan instead of a tray of impression material, design the crown on screen, and mill it in the office, so there is frequently no temporary and no second appointment.
